Michelle Branch is a singer-songwriter known for hits like Everywhere and All You Wanted. Rising to fame in the early 2000s with The Spirit Room, she later won a Grammy as part of The Wreckers, blending pop, rock, and country influences.
For this colored pencil piece, I started by carefully sketching the composition, focusing on capturing her expression, posture, and the details of her guitar. Layering soft shading and fine strokes, I built depth in her hair, clothing, and instrument. The striped shirt required precise line work to maintain consistency while keeping a natural flow. The guitar was another key element, where I blended warm tones and highlights to bring out its shape and texture.
To contrast the realism of Michelle and her instrument, I designed an intricate floral background with bold colors and flowing shapes. The rich teal backdrop enhances the organic feel, while the warm reds, golds, and greens add vibrancy. Inspired by vintage botanical illustrations, the background creates a dynamic balance that complements both her style and the warmth of her music. I had the chance to give this piece to Michelle at a show in Dallas, and it was great to see her appreciate it in person.
